Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Milestones and Gratitude

A Historic Achievement: FDA Clearance for the DNA Appliance in Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Without a doubt, one of the most significant accomplishments of 2024 was the historic FDA 510(k) clearance for the DNA appliance to treat moderate to severe pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring in children aged 6 to 17. This breakthrough marks the first-ever FDA clearance for an oral medical device specifically designed to address sleep-related breathing disorders in children.

This approval is particularly significant given the rising prevalence of pediatric OSA, which affects over 10 million children in the United States alone. These children often experience a range of health challenges such as ADD/ADHD, mouth breathing, night terrors, and dental malocclusion. Traditional treatments, such as surgeries or CPAP devices, often yield mixed results and may come with long-term risks. The DNA appliance offers a safe, non-invasive, and highly effective alternative.

The results of multi-site studies supporting this FDA clearance were compelling. The DNA appliance demonstrated an average 40 percent increase in airway volume and improvement or maintenance of health status for 96 percent of treated children. These remarkable outcomes demonstrate that the DNA appliance is not just treating symptoms but addressing the root cause of pediatric OSA, delivering lasting improvements in both breathing and overall quality of life.

This year also saw the introduction of the Class III Appliance, a groundbreaking innovation in pediatric orthodontic care. Designed specifically for children as young as three years old, the Class III Appliance provides an effective, patient-friendly solution for early intervention in Class III conditions.

Key features of the appliance include:

• Optimal Timing: Ideal for use before the eruption of the 6-year molars, addressing Class III conditions at a critical developmental stage.
• Simple and Comfortable: Requires just two hours of daytime wear combined with nighttime use, ensuring comfort for young patients.
• Efficient Results: Many children see significant improvement within 4 to 8 months, with continued care through devices like the vStarter for Kids, vStarter, or Vivos Grow.
• Child-Friendly Customization: Available in clear, blue, pink, and purple, allowing children to choose their preferred design.

Another milestone we are proud to celebrate is the launch of the VIDA and VIDA Sleep devices in Canada. VIDA’s sophisticated design and VIDA Sleep’s tailored approach to addressing sleep-related breathing disorders allow Canadian clinicians to offer their patients state-of-the-art care.

The availability of VIDA and VIDA Sleep in Canada broadens access to high-quality airway solutions and positions our VIPs in Canada to lead the way in improving sleep and breathing health. With these devices, we are taking another step toward making healthier sleep a reality for more patients worldwide.
