Dr. Mark Musso on Solving Snoring and Strengthening Marriages

This week on Vivos Voices, we visited with Dr. Mark Musso, a talented dentist and trained Vivos Integrated Provider (VIP).

A seasoned dentist with over 29 years of experience, Dr. Musso discovered Vivos Therapeutics, Inc. when educating himself on the latest advancements in the field. After participating in courses and seminars, he grew confident in his newfound knowledge to implement The Vivos System into his practice. “What Vivos has done for my practice is change the way I can handle children from two to adults to 92,” shared Dr. Musso.

Patients usually are eager to learn more about sleep apnea and its effect. They are interested in participating in screenings and appreciate that modern-day medicine is advancing towards a holistic view of the human body. “If a parent comes in and they want to talk about sleep apnea and I start educating them on what’s going on, each time they say, ‘Well, my child’s been suffering with stuff like that,’ and it’s vice versa,” Dr. Musso says. “If a child comes in suffering, the mom says, ‘Can you help my husband?’ So, this is a whole family situation.”

When you think about the bigger picture, quality sleep, or lack thereof, affects more than just you: It affects your family, your children, and your spouse. “I didn’t realize how many marriages [there are where they] sleep in different rooms,” says Dr. Musso. “I kid with my patients. I say I’m like a marriage counselor because I’m bringing them back into the same room because they don’t snore anymore and they don’t stop breathing, and it’s bringing the family back together.”

“It sounds corny,” he says with a smile, “but that’s true, and the dentist is very powerful in the way that we can treat this.”

So, I’m Dr. Mark Musso. I’m a general dentist in the Dallas area, and I’ve been doing dentistry, general dentistry for about 29 years. So, every time I see a patient, it’s a whole new understanding of what I’m looking for. In my office, uh, I see a lot of patients that have a lot of comorbidities. And, in my previous years as a dentist, I didn’t really pay much attention to that. I was looking more at teeth and how to fix them and looking at the tip of the iceberg. I didn’t get down below and really see what’s going on with that patient and understanding that these things are connected. So, what Vivos has done for my practice is change, uh, the way I can handle children from two to adults to 92. Um, if a parent comes in and they want to talk about sleep apnea, and I start educating them on what’s going on each time they say, ‘oh my child’s been suffering with stuff like that.’ And it’s vice versa. If a child comes in suffering, the mom says, ‘can you help my husband.’ So this is a, this is a whole family situation and you, I don’t, people don’t understand if you don’t sleep well, that affects the whole rest of the family. I didn’t realize how many marriages that they sleep in different rooms. I kid with my patients. I said I’m like a marriage counselor because I’m bringing them back into the same room because they don’t snore anymore and they don’t stop breathing, and it’s bringing the family back together. It sounds corny, but that’s true. And the dentist is very powerful in the way that we can treat this.
