“Just because it’s common doesn’t mean that it’s normal.”

Dr. David Ramirez on the Evolution of Pediatric Dentistry

This week on Vivos Voices, we visited with Dr. David Ramirez, a talented pediatric dentist and trained Vivos Integrated Provider (VIP).

He described how many children develop habits early on to comfort themselves. This can include thumb sucking or using soothing objects such as a pacifier. Unfortunately, this, along with a decrease in the average amount of time babies spend breastfeeding in the western world, can lead to improper growth of the mandible and maxilla.

Seeing this pattern develop first-hand, Dr. Ramirez concluded that “just because it’s common doesn’t mean that it’s normal.”

This hit close to home, as Dr. Ramirez’s seven-year-old had his tonsils removed, which led to weight gain and didn’t seem to solve the root of the problem. He then realized that there might be better alternatives to surgery. He began understanding the connection between sleep and airway and eventually found Vivos Therapeutics, Inc.

Dr. Ramirez integrated The Vivos System into his dental practice “because there’s many undiagnosed conditions that affect children early on. We’re able to diagnose these conditions, sleep airway issues, and provide relief for our patients.”
