Dr. Isabel Vahedi on Modern Dentistry

This week on Vivos Voices, we visited with Dr. Isabel Vahedi, a skilled dentist and experienced Vivos Integrated Provider (VIP).

For Dr. Vahedi, her goal is to provide a comfortable and thorough approach to dentistry. She does this by treating more than just teeth: She is also concerned about a patient’s airway, sleeping patterns, and overall well-being. “[For] a lot of my patients, the eye-opening thing has been how long they actually hold their breath while they’re asleep. We’ve had patients that are holding their breath 46 seconds at a time,” she shared. “I mean, can you imagine actually trying to do that when you’re awake?”

It is staggering for many individuals to learn about obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and how those affected stop breathing for 10-30 seconds multiple times per hour on average. They might even miss out on an hour of sleep and breathing due to airway obstruction. How does this affect the rest of the body? Our blood oxygen saturation is key to giving our organs the proper rest and repair they need. Without oxygen, our organs suffer and begin to die. For some patients with OSA, their levels can drop to as low as 70 percent while sleeping.

While we may not notice our lack of breathing during sleep, we begin to see the side effects of headaches, exhaustion, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. “For a lot of people, this is their norm. They’re used to waking up tired. They’re used to having headaches and relying on caffeine, mid-day pick-up Monster shot drinks or whatever, and that’s not normal. Pointing that out and telling them there’s actually a solution that can wean you off of all of that has been fantastic.”

“For the past 26 years, I have seen dentistry evolve and now have the ability to provide them with a solution that changes their lives. The more dentists out there are aware of this, the more we can educate our patients and help. I would tell another dentist that’s considering Vivos to absolutely do it.”
