COURSE DESCRIPTION

As a certified Buteyko Method Instructor you will be able to facilitate huge positive changes in people’s lives. The Buteyko Method can help your clients overcome some of the most common and debilitating health problems. You will learn how to apply the techniques with clients whatever their age, health or goals. The breathing method is easy for anyone to successfully integrate into their routine. Your clients will see improvements in relation to stress, sleep, energy, focus and nervous system balance, along with many other vital health parameters.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Assess breathing patterns in pediatric and adult client population.
2. Gain an understanding of breathing pattern disorders and its effect on craniofacial development, sleep disorders, mental and respiratory health in children and adults.
3. Explore strategies to help restore nasal breathing and functional breathing during wakefulness and sleep. Treating the nose does not guarantee persistent nasal breathing. For many patients, it is necessary to change the mouth breathing behavior.
4. Examine the relationship between breathing patterns during wakefulness and the phenotypes of sleep apnea.
5. Know which breathing exercises and daily program to teach for each of the following:
   1. Sleep disordered breathing
   2. Anxiety and panic attacks
   3. Asthma and respiratory health
   4. Children with dysfunctional breathing patterns
6. Work with different breathing protocols according to the patients health, age and breathing pattern, offering a tailored approach for for improved outcomes.

• BUTEYKO CLINIC CERTIFICATION COURSE SCHEDULE:

  Day 1

   

  Theory (8:30am-10:15am)

  • Respiratory Physiology
  • Functions of Nasal Breathing
  • Overview of Functional Breathing Patterns
    • Breathing Nose, Light, Slow and Deep. (LSD)
    • Breathe Light: reduced minute ventilation to achieve air hunger. (biochemical breathing)
    • Breathe Slow: 6 breaths per minute – improve gas exchange, calmer mind, improved vagal tone/recovery- helps balance the ANS.
    • Breathe Deep: improve recruitment of the diaphragm for stabilization of the spine, calmer mind, improved vagal tone/recovery. (biomechanical breathing).
    • Assessing breathing pattern disorders using Control Pause, Self-Evaluation of Breathing Symptoms Questionnaire (SEBQ) and Nijmegen questionnaires.

  Relaxation (1:30pm-1:50pm)

  • Following lunch, an audio guided relaxation and breathing session takes place. This helps attendees to experience breathing light with relaxation.

  Theory (2:00pm-3:15pm)

  • Role of Carbon Dioxide
  • Oxyhemoglobin Dissociation Curve (ODC), Bohr effect
  • Role of Nitric Oxide in human airways
  • Heart Rate variability (vagus nerve, baroreflex)

  Break (3:15pm-3:30pm)

  Breathing Exercise Practice (3:30pm-5:00pm)

  • Control Pause
  • Breathing Recovery sitting
  • Nose decongesting exercise
  • Breathe Light (three variations)
  • Breathe Slow (reduce sympathetic drive, improve alveolar ventilation)
  • Breathe Low (improve recruitment of the diaphragm)
  • Breathing nose, slow and low during physical movement

  • Breathing Re-education for insomnia, snoring and sleep apnea
  • Breathing Re-education and phenotypes of sleep apnea
  • Relationship between sleep quality and mental health

  Break (10:15am-10:30am)

  Breathing Exercise Practice (10:30am-12:30pm)

  • Control Pause
  • Breathing Recovery sitting
  • Nose decongesting exercise
  • Breathe Light (three variations)
  • Breathe Slow (reduce sympathetic drive, improve alveolar ventilation)
  • Breathe Low (improve recruitment of the diaphragm)
  • Breathing nose, slow and low during physical movement
  • Steps exercise (children from 4 years of age upwards)

  Lunch (12:30pm-1:30pm)

  Relaxation (1:30pm-1:50pm)

  • Audio guided relaxation and breathing session.

  Theory (2:00pm-3:15pm)

  • Tailoring exercises according to health, age and breathing of adults
  • Weekly format to teach breathing re-education to adults
  • Supports including the ButeykoClinic and OxygenAdvantage app

  Break (3:15pm-3:30pm)

  Breathing Exercise Practice (3:30pm-5:00pm)

  • Activating the diaphragm breathing muscle
  • Breathing protocol practise for sleep apnea

  • Protocol and practical application for children and teenagers
  • MCQ Exam preparation

  MCA Exam (10:30am-12:45pm)
